Manager, Sales Engineering

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Position Overview

A leading manufacturer of high-voltage power transmission equipment is seeking a Sales Engineering Section Manager to lead a team responsible for supporting utility customers across North America.

This role combines technical leadership, commercial strategy, and customer engagement to drive successful bid strategies, contract negotiations, and project execution for high-voltage switchgear solutions. The position plays a key role in ensuring strong customer partnerships while aligning sales engineering activities with business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Sales Engineering Operations

  • Manage and direct Sales Engineering activities to support utility customers and ensure successful technical and commercial outcomes.
  • Maintain high levels of customer satisfaction and support long-term partnership agreements.

Develop and Mentor the Team

  • Lead, train, and mentor a team of Sales Engineers.
  • Conduct performance reviews and support professional development.
  • Facilitate cross-training and continuing education.

Drive Bid Strategy and Pricing

  • Oversee development of competitive bid strategies.
  • Approve pricing aligned with division margin goals while maintaining market competitiveness.
  • Coordinate closely with business development and engineering teams.

Manage Customer Contracts

  • Lead negotiations for customer commercial contracts and terms.
  • Ensure agreements align with company objectives and risk guidelines.

Support Business Planning

  • Contribute to sales forecasting, budgeting, and staffing plans.
  • Monitor sales engineering activities and provide leadership updates.

Represent the Organization

  • Participate in customer meetings, industry events, and trade shows.
  • Support marketing initiatives and technical presentations.

Promote Operational Excellence

  • Ensure adherence to quality, safety, and environmental policies.
  • Foster strong collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, and sales teams.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in sales engineering or technical sales within an electrical equipment manufacturing environment
  • Minimum 3 years of leadership or management experience

Technical Knowledge

  • Understanding of electrical transmission and high-voltage equipment
  • Ability to interpret customer drawings, specifications, and testing requirements

Skills

  • Strong negotiation and contract management abilities
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to lead teams and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Technology

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Experience with ERP / MRP systems
