Medical Writer/Research Publications Specialist

Laine Recruiting has been engaged by one of the most respected higher education institutions and largest employers in the Rochester area! We've partnered to fill several roles within their Center for Health & Technology.

About the Role

The Medical Writer supports the development, coordination, and dissemination of scientific publications across its research programs. This role ensures that research findings are accurately represented, clearly communicated, and shared effectively with both the scientific community and broader professional audiences.

The position supports outcomes-focused research initiatives, including patient- and caregiver-reported outcome measures, longitudinal studies, and related clinical and translational research activities. The Medical Writer works closely with investigators and multidisciplinary teams to align publication deliverables with research timelines, data integrity standards, and ethical publication guidelines.

Additional responsibilities include ensuring all materials comply with authorship guidelines, ethical publication standards, and applicable data-sharing policies. The Medical Writer supports dissemination of research findings to academic, industry, and public audiences and may contribute to conference submissions and presentations as needed.

The position operates within established templates and workflows and does not require use of specialized publication software beyond standard productivity tools.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree is required; advanced degrees (MS, MA, PhD) highly preferred
  • Prior experience authoring or contributing to peer-reviewed scientific publications is required
  • Candidates should demonstrate familiarity with outcomes research and patient-reported outcome data, though they do not need to be clinicians or board-certified.
  • Neurology experience is required.
  • Experience supporting medical or scientific writing in academic, clinical research, or industry settings is highly desirable.
  • Strong scientific writing and editing skills are essential, along with the ability to synthesize and interpret research data.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
  • Successful candidates will demonstrate strong attention to detail, organization, and professionalism, as well as the ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining effective communication with team members.
Compensation & Engagement Structure

This role is structured as an independent contractor (1099) engagement, not permanent employment. Compensation for this engagement ranges from $60–$80 per hour, commensurate with experience, scope of work, and demonstrated expertise.

This is a part-time, remote position (approximately 20 hours per week) with flexibility in scheduling and a preference for some overlap with Eastern Time business hours. The engagement is expected to last six months or longer, with potential for extension based on program needs.

This position is not a W-2 role and does not constitute employment with Laine Recruiting, LLC. As an independent contractor, the individual engaged for this role will not be eligible for employee benefits, including but not limited to health insurance, paid time off, retirement benefits, unemployment insurance, or workers' compensation coverage. The contractor will be responsible for all applicable taxes, insurance, and business expenses associated with providing services under this engagement.
